Self-portrait in Jono's Helmet

Washington DC (and Jono's helmet)
The building in the background of this one is the Watergate hotel. (The one Nixon made famous.)

Washington DC (and Jono's helmet)

Washington DC (and Jono's helmet)
I don’t think Jono stopped for one red light or stop sign as we wizzed through the rainy DC streets from Georgetown to Capitol Hill. This one captures a bit of how I was feeling with his driving — he was wearing a helmet and I wasn’t!

Turn Down the Heat 1.5.aif

In the place where science and society meet,
how can we turn down the heat?

Fossil fuels, like oil and coal,
help keep our economy running,
but they release greenhouse gases
that trap the Sun’s heat,
speeding up global warming.

And global warming seems likely
to lead to some very negative things:
more powerful storms, melting at the poles,
and the extinction of some species.

So, what should society do
for the economy and the planet, too?
In the place where science and society meet,
how can we turn down the heat?

A number of states have pledged at times
to reduce their carbon emissions,
but now California has taken the lead
by setting legal requirements and limits.

Because the law creates more demand
for green alternative energy,
the economy is likely to profit
from developing cleaner technologies.

So, what should society do
for the economy and the planet, too?
In the place where science and society meet,
how can we turn down the heat?
How can we turn down the heat?
